Chinese sentence patterns you can actually use

A sentence pattern becomes useful when you can recognize it, change one part, and use it to say something you mean. Start with a small pattern and adapt it through reading and writing.

The short answer

Beginner Chinese sentence patterns are reusable frames such as 我是……, 我有……, 我喜欢……, and 我在……学习/工作. Practice them in context, change the person or situation, and write a new sentence rather than memorizing a translation alone.

LevelBeginner · HSK 1–2
Focus vocabulary模式 pattern · 改变 change · 原因 reason
Write after readingUse 我喜欢……,因为…… to write a sentence about yourself.

Chinese example

See the pattern in context

我喜欢喝茶,因为茶很香。

I like drinking tea because it smells good.

Start with a frame

A frame reduces the number of decisions you have to make at once. It should support your thinking, not replace it. Fill in the part that carries your meaning.

  • 我是……
  • 我有……
  • 我在……学习/工作
  • 我喜欢……,因为……

Change one variable at a time

Read an example about one person, then change just the subject or place. Once the sentence feels stable, add a time phrase or reason.

  • Change who
  • Change where
  • Change when
  • Add why

Move beyond the template

The long-term goal is not to stay inside blanks. Use the pattern once, close the help, and write a second version with fewer prompts.

  • Use a model
  • Write with keywords
  • Write independently
  • Review what changed
